Iscar, based in Tefen, Israel, manufactures metalworking tools used by makers of heavy equipment such as cars and airplanes. It has facilities in Tefen, the United States, Brazil, China, Germany, India, Italy, Japan and Korea.
Based on the original article I read in an Israeli business site (TheMarker.co.il) this US$4 Billion deal in cash is Buffett’s first major purchase outside of the US.

I sold machine tools during the 80′s–including disposable carbide tools which Iscar makes. Machine tools are a fantastic business during a boom but when a bust starts to appear, the machine tool business doesn’t do so well.
The main reason are machinists are an ingenious bunch and can build any product in a hundred different ways. They are extremely AWARE of perishable tooling costs and can change machining ways quickly to preserve tools when all out production is no longer a necessity.
I’m mentioning this cause maybe the Israel’s are selling 80% of their business at the top to Mr. Buffett.
