This is funny. I think there’s no one developer in the world that hasn’t had at least some of these things happen to him/her in every single project.

I joined a terrible software company in 2001, I don’t know why, probably because the girls at the reception looked so good and I was looking for a “serious” company after the last one I worked in got busted (one of those start-up companies that were supposed to change the e-commerce world, but alas, no more funding). I was assigned an unfinished project – the developer got burned out and took a few months off in South America in the middle. I, the new guy, was supposed to take over his pathetic mess. What a nightmare. It was a terribely crowded office, I shared a desk with another programmer (a 45 years old woman who couldn’t get the Windows GUI at all), both of us used 14 inch moniters. The company was full of morons, it was hopeless. I realized I made a mistake very quickly, but I signed all kinds of paperwork that made it very tricky to leave. One day it was just too much – I turned off the PC, and decided – I am going out and not coming back ever again, let them sue me.
At my last day job I was in month 12 of a 3-month project and they were still changing the requirements :-)
Carlton – now that explains how you ended up overseas for such a long time ;-) I hope they stopped looking for you :-)
Sharky – Yeah and I’m sure those were all just “minor changes” or simple “clarifications” that shouldn’t change the timeline and/or budget too much.. besides, it’s the BA’s fault the requirements weren’t capture correctly and fully to begin with rt? :-)
Right! How did you know? :-) Actually the BA’s did do a pretty ordinary job…
