The Da Vinci Method

I’m reading an interesting book called The Davinci Method. I’ve only just started it but a lot of the material rings very true to me, on a personal level both the positive and negative traits the author associates with people who strive to break away from social norms do their own thing. Also on a more general level there are interesting observations about the society we live in. For example the author makes a point about the fact that these days in most of the Western world governments don’t have much control over individuals anymore, the power lies with corporations. Take for example comparisons of expensive structures in the world, back in ancient civilizations it was mostly kings and rules of empires who built monuments and extravagant structures, then in the middle ages power transferred and it was churches and cathedrals which clearly demonstrated to the masses who had the power and money. These days when you look at impressive structures in cities they’re more likely to be buildings of financial companies or other huge conglomerates. OK, so it’s not something really that ground breaking that companies wield increasing power but the author does make some interesting observations that at least I didn’t think about before. Another example is that no generation has been marketed to as heavily and as sophisticated as we now see. Are there long term implications of this? Creating on mass scale strong emotional needs from very young age: if only you have this or that then you’d be happy / complete / successful or just simply fit in with “everyone else who already have it”.

I’m only about 20% into the book so I will revisit this mini review later but if you’re a rebellious, risk seeking, non-conformist type of person then I would highly recommend the book. There is also a website here accompanying the book with some tests and other tidbits.

    Hi eyal,
My son was diagonsed with ADHD, though he might not show all the symptoms but some of them are definately there. I was just planning to order this book and wanted to know if its helpful for such cases esp if i have to plan his development needs. I’m researching this area now, and any inputs would be very useful.
    Thanks for you help

    Hi Vishwanath,

Sorry I can’t really help on that, I don’t know the answer. I would suggest getting in touch with a qualified professional in the relevant field for an opinion.

    All the best.

    Vishwanath,

ADHD is being hyped so that the drug companies can sell you their drugs. Suggest you look up a book from Ann Block. Your kids mostly fine but will end up messed up on the drugs they wont to give you. I know of a parent with a A student whose kid just wanted to go outside and play so they drugged him. He no longer looks out the window and has much lower grades now.

Thanks Larry/Eyal for your comments. I’ll go through the book by Ann Block (though even this has some negative feedback on amazon). I too think this case of ADHD is pretty hyped as my son is normal in all situations but a bitter hyper active/inattentive at school. Anyway let me investigate further.

I saw the book and the website and even took the test and scored 80 so now I get lots of spam full with cliches from mister Loporto. The guy is a fraud, trying to get people to pay him instead of the drugs companies.

Leonardo Da Vinci did not have ADHD as far as we can tell. He was simply a genius and that’s what was “wrong” with him. The same was with Thomas Edison, which all the stories about how he was a “problematic child” where over exaggerated over the years. ADHD is a disease caused by an anomaly in the frontal cortex. People don’t get ADHD because they suppress their talents, nor they can be healed by someone just coming and telling them that they are not “crazy” or “lazy” (which they are not, but why should that surprise anyone?).

So just because something sounds right and “very much like you”, it doesn’t mean it is true. Mankind and science have advanced beyond that, otherwise we would still think the earth is flat.

    Beware,

    Oren
