Is any of my readers using a wireless router on the draft 802.11n? I was thinking of getting a new router which supports this and was interested to hear people’s opinions, recommendations etc. The main 2 devices I’m considering are the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N and the Apple Airport Extreme.

Air port is not recommended as i have friends who used it and had a hard time with it.
Hey condythug, I actually went for the Airport Extreme (before I saw your comment). It’s working fine so far, we’ll see how long it lasts :-) Took longer than usual to set up port forwarding (can’t be used with DHCP) but other than that everything else seems quite standard.
I’ve used a D-Link DIR-655 for a couple of months now. I’ve been with D-Link since many years ago. Always happy with their hardware. Their software takes time to stablize. It’s no exception with DIR-655. Their latest 3 versions of firmware all crashed my router. However the older version works fine. Performance with newer versions of the firmware is great. Even with the old version I’m using, I usually get about 50% improvement compared to wireless G.
The best thing about D-Link rounters is their range. My PC in the basement is getting the same performance as a PC next to the router which is on the 3rd floor.
Hi Gary, I’ve had more or less the same experience with D-Link, Linksys, SMC etc. Most consumer routers are more or less the same in my experience. I usually just go for lower price if there are no significant feature differences. I went with the Apple since it’s priced the same as the D-Link and has a USB connection for storage devices / printers.
